Peer-reviewed studies have linked paraquat dichloride, an herbicide better known as simply “paraquat,” to an increased risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. Yet paraquat products remain on the market in Missouri and throughout the nation, endangering gardeners, groundskeepers, and farmers, among others. If you have been exposed to this highly toxic herbicide and have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s as a result, you may qualify to join the many Missouri residents suing paraquat manufacturers for compensation.

Studies Link Paraquat to Parkinson’s Disease
Environmental Health Perspectives, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), and JAMA Neurology have each published peer-review studies supporting the link between paraquat and Parkinson’s disease. And while agricultural workers are the most likely to be exposed to paraquat, others may also be at risk of toxic exposure. A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology showed that persons who live within 550 yards of a place on which paraquat is sprayed have a 75% higher chance of developing Parkinson’s than they would have if they lived somewhere else.
Dozens of Countries Have Banned Paraquat
According to The New York Times, even a single sip of paraquat is deadly. Its high toxicity has spurred dozens of countries to ban its use, including China, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and EU nations.
Why Is Paraquat Still Used in the United States?
Years after acknowledging the link between paraquat and Parkinson’s in a regulatory filing, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reapproved the use of paraquat in the U.S. This move was met with major pushback, so much so that the EPA was compelled to respond in July 2021 with hollow guidelines for how to use paraquat safely. For instance, the government agency stated that only “certified applicators” should use paraquat.
It has been found, however, that even certified paraquat applicators may suffer toxic exposure, in part because paraquat is applied as a spray. It is far too likely for certified applicators to accidentally breathe in miniscule droplets or absorb it through minor cuts on the skin. Unfortunately, all it takes is a small amount of paraquat to set off oxidative stress, the chemical process behind health conditions like Parkinson’s.

If You’ve Been Injured, You Deserve Compensation
When product manufacturers’ negligence leads to consumer injury, the law guarantees those injured the right to compensation for their damages. This means that if you win your case, you could be paid back for your medical bills, physical/mental pain and suffering, reduced earning capacity, lost earnings, and other expenses related to your paraquat injury.
