Nursing Home Abuse: Do You Know the Signs?
Nursing home abuse takes many different forms, and each form has its own telltale signs. Get the facts on the signs and symptoms of nursing home abuse so you know what to look for when visiting your relative.
Warning Signs of Nursing Home Abuse
Nursing home abuse may be physical, sexual, emotional, financial, or neglect. The next time you visit your elderly relative in their nursing home, keep an eye out for the following symptoms:
Physical abuse: Unexplained broken bones or bruising, signs of restraint on the wrists or ankles, broken eyeglasses, the caregiver’s refusal to let you be alone with the elderly person.
Sexual abuse: Unexplained STDs or other genital infections, bruising near the genitals.
Emotional abuse: Unusual behavior that resembles symptoms of dementia, witnessing belittling or controlling behavior from the caregiver.
Financial abuse: Changes in the elderly person’s financial situation, unexplained withdrawals from the elderly person’s bank account, missing cash from the elderly person’s room.
Neglect: Unsafe or unclean living conditions, soiled bed linen or clothes, bedsores, unusual weight loss or dehydration.
Nursing home abuse is a heinous crime that often goes unreported, either due to an elderly person’s inability to communicate effectively or due to threats or intimidation on the part of the abuser. If you suspect nursing home abuse, bring it to the attention of the facility’s staff immediately. If you directly witness nursing home abuse, call 911.
