Staying Safe While Warming Up Your Vehicle

It’s officially that time of year where getting in the car is a struggle. Many people choose to let their cars warm up before getting inside, and with remote car starters, it’s easier than ever. However, it’s important to make sure you’re out of harm’s way as your car heats up. Here are some tips to help you and your loved ones stay safe and comfortable this winter.

Choose an Open Space

While your car is running, it’s expelling noxious gas. Breathing in this gas in a confined space can cause illnesses such as nausea, dizziness, and difficulty breathing. In serious cases, it can render a person unconscious. If you’re heating up your car, make sure to take it out of your garage and do so in an area where the gas can dissipate.

Check Pipes for Snow

Before starting your car, make sure your exhaust pipe is clear of any snow. If your exhaust pipe is blocked, this could mean the inside of your car is filling with carbon monoxide fumes. You cannot smell or see these fumes, so it could come as a shock to you when you start feeling the side effects. Carbon monoxide gas can quickly become dangerous and even deadly, so always check your pipe before turning on your car.

Stay Inside

Or, if you are worried about leaving your car unattended, keep a safe distance from the road. Other drivers could be traveling by at fast speeds, not see you on the road, and hit you. Even if they do see you, they may be unable to slow down in time on icy or wet roads. Make sure you are in a safe space as you wait for your car to heat to a comfortable temperature.
