After someone gets into an accident, instead of paying for medical treatment up front, the health care provider will often want a patient to sign a letter of protection to ensure that the health care provider gets paid for the medical treatment they've rendered to you.
That medical treatment is often called a lien. A lien on a case means that the insurance company for the at-fault driver is the one that's going to pay for your medical treatment, that it doesn't come out of your own pocket.
