Poor Nursing Care Facilities Listed by U.S. Senate Committee, Including 8 in the Kansas City Area

By

At the urging of two U.S. Senators, Bob Casey and Pat Toomey, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently released their ongoing list of concerning nursing home facilities flagged for providing residents with poor care. As valuable as it is to have this information, several families are now learning that their loved ones might be receiving sub-par care in the homes included in the list. In fact, 8 nursing homes listed are located in the Kansas City area, and several more are spread throughout the state of Missouri.

The Special Focus Facilities

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, their list, “Families’ and Residents’ Right to Know: Uncovering Poor Care in America’s Nursing Homes,” includes more than 400 facilities marked for receiving poor health inspections, abuse complains, issues with negligence, and more. Of these facilities, several were also designated as “Special Focus Facilities.” The focus facilities were so named because they were at risk of losing funding from Medicare and Medicaid due to ongoing issues with recurring citations, care complaints, poor healthcare inspections, and so on.

Dangerous Nursing Homes in Kansas and Missouri

The list of troubling homes includes 8 homes in the Kansas City area, 11 total in Kansas, and 17 in the state of Missouri. Some of those homes include:

  • Indian Creek Health Care Center, Overland Park
  • Serenity Care and Rehab (since renamed Overland Park Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing)
  • Pinnacle Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Olathe
  • Kansas City Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, Kansas City
  • Garden Valley Healthcare Center, Kansas City
  • Maple Wood Healthcare Center, Kansas City
  • Edgewood Manor, Raytown
  • Redwood of Raymore, Raymore
  • Hidden Lake Care Center, Raytown

Some of the complaints against these facilities include maintenance issues, poor health inspections, understaffing, poor staff training, bad hiring practices, and problems meeting healthcare needs, to name a few.
